"infilled"?
Sounds like the Toronto Airport Vineyard of old ... "Fill, fill, fill ... let it bubble up, bubble up, the holy laughter, it's coming - Fill, fill, fill!"
(Been there, done that ~ just HAD to check it out in the mid-1990s when I was asking the same sort of questions :~)
My take-away is that the true Christian walk is more about OBEDIENCE than EXPERIENCE ... Do you really love your mom & dad? Your siblings? Your roommate & neighbors? Your workmates? The really difficult people in your life? Jesus taught that even the tax collectors and sinners love their friends ~ that's humanly normal and natural. But loving your enemies... that's obedience.
But that's just one gal's opinion :~)
yeah. infilled might not be the right word.
Well, as a woman who grew up in a pentecostal church, I still sometimes say hm. I have no definitive answers. I agree with Sherrie on so many points. I would also say that I don't limit the Holy Spirit. I have never felt that "that was only for the Bible Times" mentality was healthy.
Have you just been discussing it or did you go somewhere and see it up close? What are your reactions?
my friend who is in Colombia right now is experiencing someof this stuff at her church. and she also forwarded an email to me from her missions pastor back in IL.
I strongly disagree with some things the mission pastor said, or at least the way Kathleen took it. And I really don't like some things that this church has said.
Okay, heres one: A second baptism to recieve the Holy Spirit. Um? What? The only place I can find that happening is in Acts, in one verse. Paul never mentions it, and neither does Jesus. Jesus said we are to make disciples--baptising them in HIS name, and that fulfills the requirements. So the whole second baptism thing irritates me.
Being slain in the spirit... I don't know, I think it's retarded. Not because I haven't seen it happen, (I haven't, but still) it just frustrates me. Paul talks about ours being a God of order, and I don't see slaying as falling into that. Dancing in the spirit during worship--yes, but only if it isn't disturbing other people's worhsip (I've seen both) and I don't really know how I feel about laughter in the spirit.
I don't mean to limit the Holy Spirit in any way. I belive in prophecy, healings, miracles and tongues--but in the proper context.
The whole "holy laughter" thing I haven't seen or experienced. I would have to agree on that.
I have seen many people slain in the spirit, but its been a while. I haven't ever had this experience, and I'm not sure what the benefit would be.
As far as a second baptism, I have heard that preached many times. I would say it is compared to the Holy Spirit coming in Acts...and it is mentioned twice in that sort of context--2nd chapter and also the baptism of Cornelius and his family. Generally it is taught that at this second baptism that people are given the ability to pray in tongues. This is something I have more experience with but I am still unsure about. The reference there is "Pray in the Spirit and with understanding"
PPaul is doing a series on the Holy Spirit in AM church. I haven't heard it since we go to Elevation, and we are in a different series, but it might be worth checking out. I know PPaul was involved in a pentecostal/charismatic type church before going to seminary. Perhaps he could give you more insight.
Mainly, I find the topic confusing, both sides have interesting reasons for their beliefs about the Holy Spirit's work, and in my opinion no one really understands Him. There's a middle ground or something else out there. Sorry this hasn't been extremely helpful...
