So, I have been thinking about this a lot lately, and I just wanted to put up a few questions that I have been wrestling with. I have my thoughts on them, but I want to see what you say first.
Where does life begin-conception? or birth?
Can we, as a democracy, make laws against homosexual marriage?
>>>or is that discrimination?
Does the government have the right to legislate morality?
>>>specifically regarding abortion.
And really, does it matter whether or not the government makes legislation for or against these things?
Will the US decline because of the increase in imorality that we are experiencing?
Do Protestant countries really do better than Catholic ones? (this is something that my entire history class purports as true, I however am not so sure.)
just a few, so let me know what you think. REALLY, I want to know, badly.

1.) Obviously, this is an argument that has gone on for, well, ever. I think it's quite obvious that life begins at conception, but of course I can't force anyone to believe that..however, I tell people to consider these things:
-At the time of conception, the "fetus" has DNA that will not change, whether the "fetus" is "aborted" or the "person" lives to be 90 years old.
-After the first few months, the "fetus" begins to move. I don't know about you, but usually when something kicks I view it as living.
-"Fetuses" have heartbeats. Heartbeats are a sign of life. I don't know anyone who would see someone lying on the ground, check their pulse, find a pulse, and then declare them dead.
-There are more, however I am too tired to fact check them all.
2.) I think there should be civil unions. Legalizing gay marriage would open a Pandora's box of "oppressed" groups wanting have the right to get married.
3.) Uhh. That's like saying we should make murder legal because we can't legislate morality. That's what laws ARE. Things are illegal because they are perceived as wrong. i.e., immoral.
4.) Yes. Take a look at Canada.
5.) Yes. Take a look at MTV.
6.) I don't know.

anyway, I didn't get the whole Canada thing, pretty much because I basically ignore Canada and know nothing about it. so, if you wouldn't mind elaborating, that would be awesome.

1. I think life begins in the womb (what a strange word.) However, we cannot determine whether at conception or at 2 weeks or whatever so we must concede: WE HAVE NO IDEA! Therefore if you have no idea whether something is alive or not, it is usually better not to possibly kill it.
2. Powers of Goverment
1. Create laws (morality)
2. Declare war.
3. Print money.
4. Give me a tax return.
I believe these are the only powers I care about.
3. Immorality destroys individuals. Indivduals make the collective government. Therefore yes.
4. As far as I see it pretty much all countries are secular except Islamic.

so.. maybe I should revies my first question. Yes, life begins at conception. I think pretty much everyone believes that, christian or not. Because, you know, it has to begin there, because if it didn't, well then I don't know where it would become alive along the process.
I guess my real question is this: when do we value that fetus as a human being not just a parasite living off the host (mother). My friend recently presented that view to me, and while I don't agree with it, I want to know when our society is willing to value that fetus as a human being. Is it when you go into labor? Or when the baby actually pops out? Is it when you can have the first sonogram and see if the child is a boy or a girl? Or is it as soon as that sperm finds and egg and the whole process begins?

I don't think you can ask "when does our society value it" because everyone has different opinions and since everyone makes up an overall "society," "society" will never be able to agree on anything.
Technically, as it stands legally right now, the "fetus" is not a life until it is fully expelled from the mother's uterus.

Well, I'd say that as long as it is more convenient to see this human being as a parasite instead of a miracle, our society will chose the former. It's all about what makes my life easier. A parasite is like a tapeworm...yucky and not something I want to keep. A miracle...a human baby...is so amazing! If you can make it a parasite, you don't have to feel guilty about killing it.
