Pride and Prejudice
We’ve all read it. Or, if you haven’t, it is a definite must read this Thanksgiving Break. And really, that’s all the longer it should take, because once you get into reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, you simply can’t stop.
The BBC did a six hour miniseries a few years back, starring Colin Firth as the sarcastic and awkward Mr. Darcy. It was really, the best thing that could have happened. Six hours of delightful Mr. Darcy and schoolboy Mr. Bingley.
This fall, Focus Features presents a new version of the acclaimed Pride and Prejudice, this time starring Keira Knightley and Matthew McFayden as Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy respectively.
The film is already showing at the Esquire theatre downtown and is to hit mainstream theatres later this week. It is superbly done. It leaves out none of the great details, and though it is only 2 hours and 7 minutes, it covers everything that Jane Austen herself would deem important. If you see only one movie this fall, it must be Pride and Prejudice

So, are you going to see it? After the 6 hour version, I'm still a bit skeptical that 2 hours could do it justice--although I do already have a friend who is going to see it with me at the Buck flicks. Maybe if we hear more good about it we'll spring for seeing it 1st run.
i have nothing against that movie accept for the fact that its the most chick-flick thing i have ever heard of; good for you, bad for me.
The man who can tolerate, or even mildly enjoy, a chick-flick will definitely win the affections of his lady of choice. Sounds to me that a 2 hour version just might be a good thing for you...if it means a lady won't request you watch the 6 hour version.
oh, I was doubting too. I mean, really, who can measure up to Collin Firth?
Oh, but Matthew McFayden, the man with the beautiful voice, he can do it.
Sure, some things were condensed and there were a few things that were entirely cut out, and I was sad that Ms. Bingley wasn't more involved. Mr. Darcy always had amazing comebacks for her.
Anyway, it was beautiful, and completely, on par with the BBC version. Condensed, but amazing.
I cried.
And Nathan, really, I think you would enjoy it, if you would grow up and just give it a chance.
grow up? you mean grow more estrogen? haha. i jest. i have seen parts of it, and the only thing i remember is wondering why it was entertaining. there were no explosions whatsoever.
I'm glad to hear it. Maybe I'll see it earlier than I thought. How did Keira do? Sarah and I had blogged earlier about whether she could really capture Elizabeth.
I know! My friend Laura and I had the same discussion, over and over. Let me tell you. Pride and Prejudice is really the main thing we talk about. (We also discuss Kenneth Branaugh, and which version of him is more doable.... I think Benedick, but that's a whole 'nother post....lol)
Keira actually did quite well. I was pleasantly surprised. I was doubtfull, especially becuase my main complaint on her is that she bares her teeth far too much. And usually, when she is in a movie, that is all I can think about. But that wasn't true in this one, she did quite well, I was pretty pleased.
anyway, must go. We are in Mississippi, and I need to straighten the room I am sharing with my bro (his office). He is very military in the sense of everything in its place, and let me tell you, after driving 20 hours in our car, and being in a rush to leave this morning for church, this room is in desperate need of some tidying.
I just got back from seeing it and I thought it was amazing. So, there you are.
AH! I was supposed to see it with Amanda and my mom this week, but NO! Of course the theatres here aren't big enough to have a decent movie.
