Me: Nathan called Southerners hicks today.
Mom: That's because he's only ever met West Virginians and Floridans...
Probably true. The thing I left out of my story when I told my mom was that as I walked away from the table, after Nathan made so uneducated a comment, I called him a damn yankee. I don't think he heard me. But you do now don't you!
WE ARE NOT HICKS. And the south WILL come back someday. You just wait and see.
add: No, I am not racist, just to clarify.
add: I really didn't mean that the South will make a come back. Nobody wants that. I just had an urge to be slightly obnoxious.
Me: (after telling my dad the story) Mom said he's probably only met West Virginians or Floridians.
Dad: He can feel free to say that about West Virginians all he wants... Only problem is, West Virginians aren't southerners.
I will see you Monday next,
sara

how long exactly did you live in VA?
So, since you are a Southerner, I'm wondering--what was the Civil War about? I only ask because I've heard that folks from the South have a different perspective than what you hear in school out here in the West.
the Civil War was over states rights.
and really, I don't have to have lived in VA to be proud of my heritage. It's that my dad's whole family is from there. We came with the Jamestowne expedition.
as i was born in new mexico and have lived in colorado all my life, im probably the last person who is a "damn yankee." haha. but whatever works. my dad was born in michigan, but my mom was born in massachusetts. hooray. however, i hate new england because there are too many cities there. but i like the weather there. and to be quite honest, VA is one of the most beautiful states i have seen. im not just saying that, it was nice when i was there. but then i thought south dakota was gorgeous too...
so this didnt really have a point to it. i guess it was just to say that im not a "northerner" or a "southerner." im a "westerner," if that exists.
I am pretty sure that unless you are from the South, they don't care where you live, you are pretty much a Yankee.
i wrote a three page comment last night on why the red sox are gonna beat the yankees and your stupid blogger didnt post it.
Yeah...I still remember hearing States Rights as the reason for the Civil War...and being shocked. We were taught it was about Slavery.
BTW Whether Southerners know it or care, Westerners are definitely our own breed--I agree with Nathan.
No, it was NOT over slavery, that was a load of propaganda crap that Lincoln came up with. I mean, really, the Emancipation Proclamation wasn't even issued until 1863, long after the war had started. It was ENTIRELY over state's rights. Lincoln just needed something that sounded as good as the argument of the Confederacy when they used the Declaration of independence to support their cause.
even most Yankees know that by now, so long as they are educated.
