So yea...

Life is pretty boring. i thought i would ask an interesting question and see if someone would actually comment. (HAHA!)

should the US be involved in other country's affairs?

I think no. I know, I know, we have to set an example and all that crap. We are wealthy and we need to share it. But see, what I don't understand, is why don't we first fix our own problems? All of the money that we give to other countries, or that we give in subsidies--that should go to our people who need help. The poor the taken advantage of, oh yea-and maybe to fix social security or help out our school system? WHAT AN IDEA! solve our own problems before the world's! kinda similar to taking the plank out of your own eye before helping your brother with his.

I was almost quick to judge on this comment, but then I discovered it required a little more thought, so maybe I will put thought into.

if the greatest country in the world does not help those in need, who will? that's just my gut reaction, there are probably lots of reasons to be more isolationist and i don't know all the facts. so there.

"not to quick to judge post" (not the comment) but I am still thinking.

oh yea, i agree we should help other people. but um, we do have problems here at home. and we have a nice sized debt to pay down (haha as if we ever will). i just think that if we fix ourselves up first, then we might be a little bit better equipped to help other people get up on their own two feet.

but then not even monetarily speaking. i mean, what about Iraq? thus far we have not found WMD. and I know Suddam was not a nice guy, but why did we have to go in and do it? Especially when the rest of the world was screaming not to? oh what about Vietnam? What was the reason for that. So a country goes communist (and it was the cold war i know this) why is it our job to fight a war there?

and if we're going to be the world's police (or whatever you wish to call it) why chose tings like Iraq over Sudan? What gives us the right to leave Africa on the brink of destruction? Why Vietnam over the Congo? Why do we have the right to pick and choose? If we're going to do some, we might as well do it all.

rar minor. i don't know what to think, because people with the most valid opinions about the US are people who don't live here and aren't skewed by patriotism. patriotism is a good thing, but it screws up our reasoning and we become biased to a large extent. but i would like to ask, if the US suddenly disappeared, what would happen to the world? I don't want to sound prideful, but in all honesty, a lot of the world needs the US. at least that is what i think.

the only thing about your post Minor is that you don't live in the US. You practically live in a perfect country, you know? Good schools, pretty good economy, blah bla blah. Oh yea--and no army. Because people don't hate you like the way they hate us.

Did you know that marxism and socialism is a protest against money being the chief tie between people? The US has a flipping good economy because we have taken advantage of that connection. because we have taken advantage of human nature-its greedy selfish disgustingness. and we've made it work. and people don't like us for it. And also they don't like us for other reasons.

I don't know. The vietnam war was a mistake. But I think I understand why we did it. Because they were going communist, and we were afraid of that. I mean, everyone was. In the end we didn't win, because of all the reasons you said. I don't think that they pulled out just because of protests, I think that they pulled us out, because they realized that it was a mistake to be in there in the first place. Kennedy was going to pull us out, but then he got assasinated, and yea, all that stuff after.

I don't think that all of Iraq hates us suddenly. I think that we get a lot of crappy media that says they do. But I think that they are happy that Saddam is gone, because he was a crappy leader. I think they are happy that they just had an election, I think that the Shiite Muslims are very happy because they suddenly have a power that they didn't have under the old regime. So I don't think that they absolutely hate us. But I do think they're tired of us being there, and they want us to get out.

I just thinkthat we have enough problems here at home to work on before we go out and try to fix the world. That's a burden we shouldn't have to carry, it's like me trying to fix my friends' problems before I fix my own issues.

and yea, nathan has a point that if we do just disappear, then the world would have issues. i think that a lot of foreign markets would struggle because I think that our economy helps to fuel that of the world's. But at the same time, I think that certain countries would be very happy. Suddenly there wouldn't be random bases with American troops all across the world. Germany, Japan, the Balkans... etc. I think that they would be happy to feel as though they are finally free of us. And I think that Puerto Rico would both struggle and yet be happy. i don't know for sure. But then, there would be countries that would miss us. I mean, where Britian be with out us?

Costa Rica is a slightly unfair comparison. I mean, you haven't had a military for 50 years. You have a much smaller population, and yea, you have Nikas, but mostly you are Ticos. Unlike the US which has people here from EVERYWHERE. My neighbors across the street are Jewish. Natalie Lira rants about her Mexican heritage. I am Welsh (mainly by ancestry, but still, have you seen my sunburn?) The ladies who cleaned our house today hardly spoke English. A girl in my history class moved here from Thailand. I mean, we have people from all over the world. And we have enemies from all over the world. so of course we put a lot into the army and weapons and defense. we do have to protect ourselves. and we do like being a superpower, so that isn't going to change. Hello? I mean, we did win the Cold War, and I don't think we plan on giving up that position anytime soon.

Yea your school system is better-but how many less kids do you have to educate? And you don't have to fight over bilingual education because we have so many freaking Mexicans coming over the border! At least the Nikas speak spanish!

I guess my point is that the US is not an inherently bad place, and we don't have an inherently bad government. I mean, we do elect them (for the most part) and we can take them out of office if we are unhappy with them. So we get what we bargain for.

I just think that we need to stop being the world's police. Since when did Bush become god?
